Warning: Works of Fiction May Contain Fiction

I always thought it was obvious that not all of a work of fiction (or necessarily any of it) is true. Apparently, not everyone believes that. I keep seeing posts where people are offended by an author’s view on something – based solely on the viewpoint of one of the characters. If this keeps up, I imagine books will start with the same kind of warnings as DVDs:

The views expressed in the dialogue and plot are solely those of the characters providing them and do not represent the opinion of the author, publisher, or their affiliates.

Then, maybe more people would stop assuming that the author agrees with everything the characters say. Of course, since all of the characters don’t generally agree with each other (*cough* plot conflict *cough*), I’m not sure how people decide which character’s opinion is the author’s in the first place.
