The problem with the things you tell yourself is that you also tend to tell them to other people. And before those people have a chance to make their own judgements of you, they take your judgements. They think you re undisciplined, or a bad writer, or not funny.
It’s amazing how often we can sabotage ourselves that way. And even if people notice that our actual abilities don’t match what we’ve told them, then they still have a negative impression because what we told them wasn’t true (“she must just be lazy,” “he’s begging for compliments,” etc.).
